RURAL COUNTIES DAY

In March, Walton County Tourism partnered with Walton County Economic Development Alliance to participate at Rural Counties Day at the Florida Capitol. This annual event was spearheaded by Senator Corey Simon as a way to emphasize the distinctive offerings and benefits of Florida’s rural counties, as well as their significance to state’s overall economic success. All 31 of Florida’s rural counties took part in this event, each showcasing the distinct assets and amenities that make their county thrive.

With an economic impact of more than $6 billion, it’s no surprise Walton County’s top economic driver is tourism. The industry supports more than 40,000 jobs directly and indirectly, and saves local households an average of $2,000 in taxes annually.

Walton County is also rich in agricultural output. According to the Walton County Economic Development Alliance (WCEDA), our rural county ranks 5th in the state for poultry and egg sales, 8th in the state for cotton and cottonseed sales and 14th in hog and pig sales. In 2022, the county counted 695 farms covering over 91,000 acres, with a market value of $39 million (in products sold).

Frost Lane Farms took part in Walton County’s display, giving away samples to curious legislators and staff strolling the plaza. They handed out freshly picked collards, kale and green onions, as well as farm-made fruit jams and jellies – including the popular Japanese Persimmons. This working farm proudly promotes ethical and healthy growing methods for their vegetables, fruits and Red Angus beef. Learn more about their family operation at frostlanefarms.com.
